Hard began his career in journalism in 1902 as a reporter for Northwestern University Settlement House's monthly newsletter. By 1906, he was contributing to numerous magazines as a freelancer. In 1929, Hard ventured into radio, and in 1932 he broadcast reports from the Republican National Convention in Chicago.
